Happy Thursday folks! Big news today in the world of JeninCanada-land; I'm pregnant! Yesterday was my first ultrasound and I'm measuring at 11 weeks and 2 days. I've known since the middle of December for sure (thank you over the counter pregnancy test) and highly suspicious since before that (ooowww my boobs). Since everything seems to be going well I figured it was time to tell my family and of course, the internet! lol Ryan is his usual not-too-excited yet self, but I understand as this is something that's happening to me while he watches, not something that's happening to us or to him. He just has to deal with my nausea and tiredness for now, but later I know he'll metamorph into Super Dad 2.0 and it makes my heart melt to think of him holding another wee little person we created. <3

Being a fat lady my stomach looks almost the same, though I do notice my pants are already a bit more snug and so is my bra (did I mention ow boobs?), so there'll not be any bump pictures for a while. I had no trouble with the ultrasound tech today, no comments about my weight or fat getting in the way of their instrument, and my midwife seems pretty cool. Other than a comment at our first visit a month ago about eating healthy, she hasn't said a word about my size. I shouldn't be too surprised though; I'm 'average' size, a small fat, so not subjected to the same kind of nasty behaviours my bigger sisters of size endure when pregnant. That's my thin-enough privilege, and I acknowledge it.
Well-Rounded Mama's blog is a fantastic resource for fat moms and moms-to-be; I'll be spending a lot of time there over the next 6-7 months, planning for a Vaginal Birth After Cesearean (sadly at the hospital and not at home since the regional hospital doesn't allow for midwives to try VBAC at home) but trying not to get my hopes up too high. It's been 5 years, almost 6 by the time this one's ready to arrive, and a c-section might be my only option. *deep breath*
Don't forget about Monday's contest! Open till 11:59pm Sunday night (my time PST). I've got some good entries so far, but I'm in need of more! Also, happy Imbolc for those you celebrating this important Celtic fire-festival.

Gabe, just a few days old and home for the first time from the hospital.

Omg congrats!
Congratulations to you & your family on the wonderful news! I will be following your pregnancy with interest. I know you & the baby will be great.
I am much older than you, 62, & interestingly enough, I got the constant hounding about my weight with my first pregnancy, when I went in weighing 135 pounds at nearly 5'6" & weighed 161 at delivery. (Thin periods in my life have been few, brief, & non-existent for the last 34 years.) I weighed 156 at my first prenatal exam for my second son & got no hassling during the pregnancy about weight gain, weighing 193 at delivery. However, the young Family Practice resident wrote on my chart, under 'possible complications of pregnancy', when I was ALL of 156 pounds, "obese". I have to say that, even though I was not part of fat acceptance yet, that still pulled my chain & perhaps is what really started me on the road toward fat acceptance, the idea that we lived in a culture which taught young doctors that a woman of 5'5.5", 156 pounds, should be considered 'obese'. It started me researching & seriously thinking about body autonomy & how arbitrary standards in our culture are.
Here is to a healthy, joyous pregnancy & here also is to a world where mothers of all sizes are treated well & fairly & children of all sizes are cherished & celebrated.
yayay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you everyone! What a wonderful thing to wake up too.
Patsy: I was about 165 with my first pregnancy and went up to just over 200lbs. My weight wasn't mentioned much but then again, we're not so obsessed here in Canada (in general). I hope this continues to be true out in BC!
Congratulations :)
Thanks Ragen1
